When Barack Obama was in the process of ramming ObamaCare through Congress, he counted on the support of labor unions – and he got it. But, now? A growing number of unions feel duped – by Obama himself.
Many union leaders are angered by what they say will be unexpected consequences of ObamaCare implementation – the probability that millions of their members could lose their healthcare benefits altogether. From Newsmax:
The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) said it is worried that its members will actually lose healthcare coverage they have now, once the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented early next year, The Hill. Joe Hansen, president of the UFCW, a 1.3 million-member group that endorsed Obama in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, wrote an editorial published in The Hill that Obama’s claim at the 2009 AFL-CIO convention that members could keep their current insurance coverage under the new law “is simply not true for millions of workers.”
“You can’t have the same quality healthcare that you had before, despite what the president said,” Hansen asserted, adding: “Now what’s going to happen is everybody is going to have to go to private for-profit insurance companies. We just don’t think that’s right. … We just want to keep what we already have and what we bought at tremendous cost.”
Welcome to the Field of Broken Dreams, guys.
At issue is the fact that many UFCW members have multi-employer Taft-Hartley plans, and the law apparently does not provide tax subsidies for the approximately 20 million people covered by them.
In addition to the UFCW, The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers have jumped aboard the Anti-ObamaCare train and has called for “repeal or complete reform.”
“We’re concerned that employers will be increasingly tempted to drop coverage through our plans and let our members fend for themselves on the health exchanges,” said David Treanor, director of health care initiatives at the Operating Engineers union, while Unite Here has voiced discontent with the law. Something tells me the list will grow longer before it gets any shorter.
According to a Fox News poll released this week, American voters want to put the kibosh on Obamacare at a rate of 56% in favor of scrapping the system to 34% who want to stick with the law. As Keith Koffler pointed out, this poll was administered jointly by one Republican and one Democratic firm. In other words, liberals can’t pull an Obama and blame it on Fox.
Little did Nancy Pelosi know when she uttered the infamous “We have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it” line that not only would people do exactly that – but that millions of Americans wouldn’t like what they found one bit.
