Balloon Fiesta Park will host a unique tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy Friday night — a balloon glow in their memory.
Organizers said it’s a very New Mexico way to show support for the families affected by the tragedy.
“I hope it puts a smile on their face, I hope that they know that our thoughts and our prayers are with them. We can’t be up there, but we can do something for them here and I hope they do see it,” said local pilot and organizer Slade Bogle.
The idea of a balloon glow memorial started off small, hoping for 26 balloons, one to honor each victim. Now, it’s grown to more than 40 balloons and will be held at Balloon Fiesta Park.
“We are the balloon capital of the world and I figured what better way to do it, than put on a glow and show everybody how much we care,” says Bogle.
Bogle said the tragedy hits home, no matter where you are.
“I have a six year old and a three year old. I can’t imagine knowing that I would never be able to hug them again. It would kill me. This is for all the parents that lost their children, all the teachers, everyone. I know everybody is hurting and this is all we can do so we are going to do it,” says Bogle.
The balloon glow memorial is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Balloon Fiesta Park.
The event and parking are free.
